3. Avoid banks as much as possible

You can probably get away with using your personal account for business expenses for several months to a year (just do a good job keeping track of your business expenses). There is no law that legally requires you to get a business account, but for the IRS to see you as a legitimate business you need to show that your business is operating as a real business (which means opening a business account). In the case of a LLC or corporation, if you run into some legal issue, you must show that you as an individual are separate from your business. This protects you from being sued personally.

5. Put your website up as quickly as possible

Most people know that anyone can create a website. My original opinion on this (my business was not a website based business) was that people would not see this as valid proof of being a business (and it is NOT). Yet, most people are not knowledgeable about starting a business (this includes your customers). The first question everyone asks is “do you have a website”? It is very frustrating to answer the question with “not yet”. In my case, I had the domain and I was working on a reservations system and database that linked to my website. I was unwilling to post anything until I had it somewhat together. This was a mistake on my part. I underestimated the perceived value of a website. It is relatively cheap and can shut down most nosey inquiries. Valid or not, others perceive a website as an indicator of legitimacy.
